While television and other media have made it a practice toanoint well-known celebrities as positive role models for kids,the great majority of people still believe that parents shouldbe the foremost role models of their children. In terms of nurturing children, the most common comment is toshow your love and concern. Tell them you love them every dayand show affection daily through hugs, kisses and touches. Inspite of busy schedules, make time for special family fun activities . Also make the effort to meet your child's friendsto build stronger rapport with them and to gauge the influencethey exert on your kids.
Understanding is another key in becoming an effective rolemodel for your child.
As the saying goes, "Understand - don't take a stand."Communication is vital and should always be a two-way street.Listen to your kids and find out what's going on in their livesand if anything is bothering them. Let them know that they cantalk to you about anything under the sun. It is important toremember that children who have good communication with theirparents are more likely to ask for their advice than turn totheir peers. Parents constantly demand respect from their children, butremember that is it is not something that can be taken forgranted. Like most things of real value, respect has to beearned. And oftentimes, the best way to earn respect is to giverespect. This also means that you have to learn to empathize, toput yourself in your kid's shoes and understand what it means tobe him. And always try to avoid putting your children insituations where they feel disregarded, disrespected,humiliated or embarrassed. Such situations can sometimes leavedeep emotional scars.
Remember that you have to teach your children to respectthemselves as well. Teach them to stand up for themselveswithout putting their safety at risk. Discuss ways to solveproblems without fighting. Make them aware that fighting neversolves a problem. Most importantly, advise them that physicalforce or intimidation does not win respect, rather, it is thequality of one's character that wins respect.

1. “Please make up your mind!”
If you use this way of approach when you ask your child to do something – or not to do something anymore – you say loud and clear what you mean and you are showing the child that he or she is responsible for his or hers actions. This way of getting into a conversation has the gift of teaching the little one what cause and effect mean and, not lastly it doesn’t make you “the bad person”.
2. “I love you but I don’t like the way you are acting.”
If you need to teach him a think or two about discipline, you have to make him understand the difference between the deeds done and the person that does them.Saying that you love him is very important, because this way he realizes the main purpose of the conversation is not to punish him, but to show him what is right to do and how he should behave.
3. ”I need you to help me solve this situation.”
If the little one has found an activity that bothers you, like mumbling during dinner or playing with the food, express yourself clearly as if you are the one that has a problem.
4.”What did you really mean by that?”
When kids fight and get nervous, it is possible for them to say things like “I hate you”. but that doesn’t have to scare you because these are the first words that come to mind when they are engaged in a conflict with their friends. But you can help them get over it and make them think of what was it that made them so nervous and angry.
5.”People are different and they have different needs.”
When you here you child say for the thousandth time “But this is not fair”, you have to make them understand that the reason that makes people be treated differently is the fact they have different needs.
