Parents dread the terrible twos. Tantrums in toddlers are notorious throughout the parenting world; and with good reason.
There is nothing worse than trying to get the weekly shop done and you are in a crowded supermarket and all of a sudden your toddler is throwing the tantrum of all tantrums! What do you do? With all the eyes of the world (well the supermarket) watching your next move the pressure is on!
The first thing to remember is that the tantrum is not directed at you nor is it a reflection of your parenting skills. It may feel different to this, but be assured that this is not the case.
At times tantrums are because they have been told “No!” and other times they are down to the child being frustrated, whether with the situation or down to their own ability that they are still developing.
So what do you do when all hell breaks lose and you toddler is in the middle of a tantrum?
There are two acknowledged approaches; the strong embrace and totally ignoring the situation.
Depending on the situation will depend on the approach you take. When in a crowded area, it may be difficult to ignore your child. In which case, a strong cuddle may be the best approach to the problem.
It may be best when you to ignore the tantrum as it will get the message across to the child that negative behavior does not warrant your attention.
When ignoring the child try not to be overly concerned by their behavior. Seeing them in full tantrum can be terribly shocking and upsetting. They will at some point throw themselves on the floor, but this will not usually cause them any harm. They have had practice at it remember!
Once the tantrum has come to end, to prevent further shows of this kind, try to give them something to play with or avert their attention.
Tantrums will run their natural course and to help prevent them from being continued as they grow, it is best to be consistent with your treatment to tantrums. As the toddler grows, they will realize that throwing a tantrum will get them no where and is a fruitless exercise.
If however you do give in to their tantrums, especially when they are tantruming over a material object, you will find it increasingly difficult to prevent such shows and further more they will only get worse.

“ Tips for Toddler Discipline” Free toddlers activity & child discipline guide parenting toddler Toddlers are great fun and a lot of hard work. The most stressful thing that any parent has to deal with when handling a toddler is disciplining them.
Disciplining a child is a sensitive topic as everyone has their own very personal take on the matter. But there are some pointers and tips that all parents will benefit from reading.
Have clear ground rules:
Setting ground rules is a simple enough task. We all know what is acceptable and unacceptable in our own houses. The key though is to ensure that you enforce these ground rules.
Having them displayed and in bright child friendly colours will help them draw the child’s attention, long before they can read the words that are written there. This gives you as the enforcer not only a reference, but also a tool. If they are house rules then the pressure is off you as an individual.
Have clear and definitive discipline strategies for when they are broken also helps to set boundaries and stops the inevitable questions of “But why?” which can sometimes be terribly frustrating.
Praising to defuse the situation:
You would be surprised at how powerful praise can be. Even if a child is doing something they really shouldn’t be, like throwing their food whilst at the dinner table. But if they are sitting at the dinner table, you should praise them for this.
Toddlers recognize praise and feel as though they have achieved something, by praising their good behavior and ignoring poor, toddlers soon acknowledge that to get your attention they will need to be good. This obviously promotes positive behavior in your child. You may choose to use rewards as a way to back praise up, stickers I find work exceptionally well on children of all ages.
Reprimanding:
There will be times when you have no choice but to reprimand your child. Although you may well be upset with their behavior, you have to remember to talk to your child in a low but firm tone. Yelling at your toddler will not help them to listen or to understand. All that you have achieved through this is to alienate and upset your child.
Always come down to your child’s level. Telling them off when you are looking down on them is an incredibly intimidating action that should be avoided if at all possible.
By making your child maintain eye contact with you you are able to ensure that they are listening and understanding what you are saying.
Always ensure that you tell your toddler why you are reprimanding them. It will be obvious to you, but may not be to the toddler. Remember that they are still learning right from wrong, and if you tell them off without giving them a reason it undermines this whole process.
