Inspiring Parenting Quotes:

Having one child makes you a parent; having two you are a referee.
- David Frost

Any astronomer can predict with absolute accuracy just where every star in the universe will be at 11.30 tonight. He can make no such prediction about his teenage daughter.
- James T. Adams

Kids Activities:

FreeToddlersActivity&DisciplineGuideNot only do kids of all ages love to play games, games are a creative and inexpensive way to entertain children. With a little imagination you will soon have them making up their own games!

Whether you're looking for birthday party games or just something to keep the little ones busy for a little while, I think you'll find these games easy to learn and fun for all ages.

Apple Stamping

Apple stamping is a lot of fun. Cut an apple in half, and carve out the shape of the letter "A".

Have your child stamp the letter on a sheet of paper and say the "A" sound each time they stamp.

Angels

Cut out a large white triangle for the body, and skin-colored circle for the head, and trace hand prints on white construction paper for the wings.

Glue together, and add facial features and a halo.

My "A" Book

Staple several pieces of white construction paper together with a colored construction paper cover. Print "My A Book" and your children's name on the cover.

Cut out magazine pictures of those things which begin with the letter "A", as well as actual upper and lowercase letters from ads or article titles.

Let the children chose the pictures and letters they want, and glue them onto their book pages. Later, arrange a time for the children to read their books to you.

“Fun Things to Do with Your Kids for Valentine's Day”

With Valentines Day approaching, many are wondering what fun things they can do with the kids. Sheeze.com shares some great Valentine's Day ideas for crafts, games, and recipes.

Crafts

"Pocket full of love"

What you need:
An old pair of jeans
Fillables - candy, fake flowers, etc
Writables - permanent marker, fabric paint, etc.

Directions:

- Take an old pair of jeans and cut out the back pockets (keeping both sides of the pockets intact). Fill the pockets with candy, fake flowers or anything else you can think of.

- Decorate the outside of the pockets.
- Make a heart and write the words "Pocket Full Of Love" inside the heart with markers or fabric paint.
- Decorate as you like.

"Spoonfuls of Kisses"

What you need:
Plastic spoon
Two Hershey's Kisses
Ribbon
Cardstock or construction paper

Directions:

(You may precut everything for the little kids)
- Trace a heart on the construction paper (fold construction paper in half first) or cardstock.
- Punch a whole for the ribbon to tie on the spoon when it's done.
- On your card, write "Here's a Spoonful of Love & Kisses."
- Place a couple of kisses in the bowl of the spoon and wrap with ribbon or tulle. Tie in a bow, to secure it.
- Tie it to the card in the hole you punched out.

Games

"Musical Hearts"

This game is similar to musical chairs. Make a large red heart that a person can hold in both hands. Everyone stands in a circle.
Someone then plays music (a popular friendship song, etc.). When the music starts, pass the paper heart clockwise. When the music stops - the person standing on the left of the person holding the heart is "out" and must exit the game.
The game continues - until the last person remains holding the heart. Give the winner a handful or box of candy!

Recipes

"Valentine Sodas"

What you need:
Ginger-ale
Strawberry ice cream
Whipped cream
1 teaspoon Strawberry preserves (optional)

Directions:

Fill a tall glass with strawberry ice cream, about 3/4 full.
Pour ginger-ale over the ice cream. Top with whipped cream and strawberry preserves. Serve with a spoon.
Yum, yum! Kids love it!

“Debating and Arguing”

As a parent I am astonished at the amount of time and energy wasted when we find ourselves arguing and debating with a small child.

Almost each and every parent will be lucky enough to experience this attempt of belittlement. The end result of a debate with a toddler is about as useful as trying to get blood from a stone.

Many parents have got the idea that they must explain to their children in every little detail of what is going on in life, which will only bring us trouble, being the extremely intelligent, but none the wiser, parent.

Toddlers crave attention and there’s a sure fire way to getting copious amounts of it by continually asking endless questions.

If we dissect these questions we will find the actual list of questions quite small, but if asked a hundred different ways, the answer will be different each time , therefore the parent will continue to give that attention.

We all know how investigative children are and how much they like to ask “But why?” this in many cases is not a bad thing, if they are interested in what we have to say but, on the other hand we get the questions just to get the attention.

When your children asks a question, firstly you decide if its knowledge they are looking for or if its simply putting you to the test, if you decide its for real give your children an honest answer.

For example, if your children were jumping up and down on their beds, your instant reaction would more than likely be to tell them to stop it, then you would most likely be asked “But Why?”

Then you need to explain the dangers of their actions, telling them they may be hurt.

But the answer is simply to be firm and tell them and say, “Because I said so,” obvious to you and I the answers but our children are not really interested in anything but to push our limits.

Beware the answer, a toddler is far to self-centered to be interested in you pointing out the dangers involved, and wont feel any happier for you doing so.

Shouting…

Raising our voice at our children is extremely poor excuses for discipline, even still; so many of us persist in doing so.

Children are very sensitive susceptible to their environment, if there is yelling and fighting then the children tend to get a little boisterous, the more the parents yell the more excitedly nervous the children reacts and begins the vicious circle.

In the quest for a quiet life, shouting should be kept to a minimum, not to mention it rarely gives any satisfaction.

Do you have a local library? If so then you might be surprised to find that things have changed in recent years.

Not only can you borrow books now, but also tapes and CDs and even videos. Also, there are usually lots of current issue magazines to browse through. Our town library has a museum attached to it, all about the town in the Victorian era.

There is also a section on pottery that used to be made here, as our town is famous for this pottery.
