Kids Activities:

FreeToddlersActivity&DisciplineGuideNot only do kids of all ages love to play games, games are a creative and inexpensive way to entertain children. With a little imagination you will soon have them making up their own games!

Whether you're looking for birthday party games or just something to keep the little ones busy for a little while, I think you'll find these games easy to learn and fun for all ages.

POOR PUSSY

This is a tried and true game which has been popular for generations. Arrange players in a circle. except for one child who is designated "Poor Pussy".

Poor Pussy kneels in front of any player and acts like - you guessed it - a pussy cat. While he or she is meowing, the player must stroke Poor Pussy's head and say "Poor Pussy, Poor Pussy" without smiling. If the player petting Pussy smiles or laughs, they become "Poor Pussy" in the next round.

Think about how difficult it is not to crack up while petting someone's head and saying "Poor Pussy"! To make it worse, Poor Pussy is allowed to do anything to make players lose their composure, including silly faces, strange purring sounds, or other catlike moves.

Other players are also permitted to laugh and do whatever possible to make it more difficult for the designated person to keep their cool.

Wall to wall

Rules

This game is also known as Den to den, Top and bottom or Running across.

The aim of this game is to cross from one place to another without being caught. One person is IT and stands in the middle of the space between two walls or bases. Everyone else lines up along one base or wall.

When IT gives the signal, the other players have to try and run across the space to the other base. If they are touched by IT then they must go into the middle and try to touch or tig the other players.

If they reach the other base or wall, they can wait while they count to 10 and then have to run back to the first base or wall and so on until everyone has been caught.

• Once you have started running from one side to another you must keep going, you can not turn back.

• You must not wait at any base for longer than it takes you to count to 10.

• If you turn back or wait too long then you must join IT in the middle.

• The last one to be caught is the winner.

What you need

An open space to cross from one place to another (such as across a playground from wall to wall)

LEAPFROG

Rules

This game is also known as Frog jump.

The simplest way for two people to play Leapfrog is for one person to turn sideways to the other person, bend over, put their hands on their knees or legs and tuck their head in towards their chest. They are then a frog.

The other person then has to run and leap over the frog, placing their hands on the frog’s back to help them over. This game can also be played in a larger group with a line of frogs to keep it going for longer –

The game ends when you get tired, run out of space or time or fall over!

Easy Kids Recipe:

5 Minute Strawberry Jam

Nothing tastes better than fresh picked strawberries.

For many people, making homemade jams and jellies conjures up memories of grandmother in the kitchen preparing bushels of fruit, stirring and straining, and sterilizing jars.

Actually, nothing could be simpler. The key to making jam is small batches. Do not double the recipe. The jam will not set up.

This strawberry jam keeps in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. But, we’ve never been able to keep it around that long! It’s also great as an ice cream topping.

Try this quick and easy recipe with your kids.

It makes a great Mother’s Day present for family and friends. And, if you’re lucky, they may even save some for you.

Ingredients

1-pint strawberries, hulled and sliced

2-tablespoons fruit pectin

1/2 teaspoon butter

1-cup sugar

2 8-ounce jelly jars

Directions

In a medium sized bowl, crush the strawberries with a potato masher

In a skillet, combine the crushed strawberries, pectin, and butter.

Stirring constantly, cook over medium-high heat, until the mixture boils.

Add the sugar and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute and remove from the heat.

Pour the jam into the jars. Seal. Refrigerate until the jam is set, approximately 6 hours. Keep jam refrigerated. It will keep for up to 3 weeks.

“Button Bauble Pins”

Materials:

• Lightweight cardboard
• Buttons
• Safety pin
• Felt

Cut small shapes from lightweight cardboard.

Glue buttons on the cardboard shapes and let them dry.

Hold a safety pin by the side that opens, and glue the other side to the back of the cardboard.

Do this with each button pin.

Cut a small narrow strip of felt for each button pin.

Glue the strip to the cardboard and across the back of each safety pin.

When dry, wear the pin or give as a gift.

Felt Names

A great gift idea for new babies or kids of all ages is to have their name on the bedroom door.

This project is rated AVERAGE to do.

What You Need

• Felt of any colour
• Matching thread and needle
• Scissors
• Fabric marker
• Toy stuffing

How To Make It
1. Write the letters (about 10cm high) onto the felt (doubled over) with the fabric marker. (I actually printed out the alphabet on my computer and use them as templates.)

2. Cut the letters out and blanket stitch the two halves together leaving a gap to stuff.

3. Using a knitting needle or pencil gently stuff small amounts of toy filling into the letters to make them puffy, then finish stitching up. (Hint: With really curvy letters such as S it is easier to stuff a small amount as you stitch around.)

4. When all the letters are finished, decide how the letters should be joined together.

5. Working at the back of the letters, stitch the letters together only where they join.

6. This bluetak (kneadable, adhesive putty) to the wall really easily, or if wool yarn is sewn to the first and last letter, could be hung that way.

Variations...
• Use a different colour for every letter.
Put a shape on the ends of the name e.g.. hearts or stars.

“Feeding Fussy Eaters Without Fights”

It is really surprising how much time and effort is wasted on trying to force feed a toddler to eat three square meals a day.

Most of this is only a myth.

A toddler will only eat as much as they feel comfortable with.

Toddlers tend not to need three large meals a day, but, maybe four or five smaller ones depending on activity, size, and an assortment of other things.

Trying to force your toddler to eat is useless, ever tried getting them to open up, here comes the airplane, well it’s a waste of time.

Some toddlers take to food like a duck to water, almost to the point of scraping the pattern from the plate, while others sit and play or dawdle and run at first chance, finding food a complete bore.

There are thin toddlers, there fat toddlers, some toddlers will consume anything and others are extremely picky, all this is part of a child’s personality, and wont change no matter how hard you try.

Don’t Fight, Feed

The times at which meals are given are fairly important, toddlers want to eat when they are hungry, sure it may not be mealtime. But a light snack such as fresh fruit won’t do them any harm or interfere with their feeding time.

Here Are Some Tips For Mealtimes.

1. Meals need to be organized, uninterrupted and peaceful. Noisy disorganized meals will distract your toddler from what they are supposed to be concentrating on. Toddlers should sit at the table with the rest of the family, if need be a parent should sit beside the toddler so they can assist with feeding.

2. As much as your toddler should eat a varied meal the same as the rest of the family, if variety is not your toddler’s strong point then serve the same things they like, so long as its nutritional, they’re the ones who have to eat it, not you.

3. Your child should know the rules of dinner time. These rules should include, when your toddler eats a fair portion of the meal then he is entitled to have sweets. If your toddler point blank refuses to eat his meal but wants the sweets, the answer must be a firm no. Explaining the reasons why.

4. When preparing a meal, keep in mind that if your toddler refuses to eat a meal that has taken hours to prepare, you are not going to be the happiest person in the house.

5. Gently encourage your toddler to eat, don’t use bribes or force.

6. Let your child sit alone for a while if he is dawdling and taking his time, its no good you getting up set or stressing over it. When you are sure your toddler is not going to eat any more, clean up and allow him to leave the table.

7. Your toddler has the right to eat or not their food, just the same as a parent has the right to fight with them but, the parent should have more sense than to waste time with fighting. This being said, your toddler should not be allowed anything else to eat like chips and lollies or even fruit until such time they have eaten their tea.

If you follow these simple tips, your mealtimes should run a lot smoother.

Have a home cinema day. Before hand, video record a couple of children's films off the TV.

Disney Channel shows some excellent ones. Stock up on masses of cheap popcorn and make some juice lollies in lolly moulds before hand.

Pull the curtains. Lights, Camera, Action!

Kids Stories

Children's sermon:
One Easter Sunday morning as the minister was preaching the children's sermon; he reached into his bag of props and pulled out an egg. He pointed at the egg and asked the children, "What's in here?" "I know!" a little boy exclaimed. "Pantyhose!"

Grandma's age:
Little Johnny asked his grandma how old she was. Grandma answered, "39 and holding." Johnny thought for a moment, and then said, "And how old would you be if you let go?"

Prayers:
The Sunday school teacher asked, "Now, Johnny, tell me, do you say prayers before eating?" "No sir," he replied, "We don't have to. My mom is a good cook!"

The mood ring:
"My husband bought me a mood ring the other day. When I'm in a good mood it turns green. When I'm in a bad mood, it leaves a red mark on his forehead."

Turn-About is Fair:
When my three-year-old son opened the birthday gift from his grandmother, he discovered a water pistol. He squealed with delight and headed for the nearest sink. I was not so pleased. I turned to my mother and said, "I'm surprised at you. Don't you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water guns?" My mother smiled and replied..."Oh, I remember."
