Inspiring Parenting Quotes:

Children nowadays are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food, and tyrannise their teachers.
- Socrates (looks like nothing much has changed over the centuries!)

Until I was thirteen, I thought my name was 'shut up.'
- Joe Namath

Kids Activities:

FreeToddlersActivity&DisciplineGuideNot only do kids of all ages love to play games, games are a creative and inexpensive way to entertain children. With a little imagination you will soon have them making up their own games!

Whether you're looking for birthday party games or just something to keep the little ones busy for a little while, I think you'll find these games easy to learn and fun for all ages.

FIRE ALARM RELAY

Prepare two sets of fire fighter's clothing, including boots, oversized jackets, hats and gloves. Mark a starting line and place two chairs across the room with an empty wrapping paper tube on each. This will be the location of the fire and the hose to put it out.

Divide guests into two teams and demonstrate the proper procedure for the game. They must put on the firefighter's clothing, run to the chair, pick up the "hose" and run around the chair with it spraying the fire, set the hose back on the chair, return to the dressing station, take off the clothes and go back to their line.

The next person on their team then repeats the whole procedure until all team members have taken a turn. The team that completes the relay first is the winner.

This game can be played with any type of clothing. Match it to fit the theme of your party.

Grow Your Own Avocado Plant!

Get several avocados. Cut them open to remove the pits. Help the children plant the pits by sticking three toothpicks in the sides of each pit, evenly spaced.

Fill a small glass with water, and set the pits so that the pointed end of the pit is in the water.

Watch the root of the avocado grow, then replant in loose soil.

This makes a beautiful plant, but it will usually not yield avocados, as most avocado trees take an average of 13 years to produce fruit, and they must be cross-pollinated with other avocado trees to produce fruit.

Finger Puppets

Finger puppets are always a big hit in role playing with children.

They can be easily made from construction paper, and decorated with almost anything, such as cotton balls, glitter, yarn, markers, stickers, etc. Have each child make up a finger puppet and divide the children into small groups.

Have each group do a small puppet show for the others. You can easily construct a stage out of a cardboard box, using tissue paper or fabric scraps for the side curtains.

Easy Kids Recipe:

Gelatin Rainbow

6 1/4 c Boiling water
2 Jello(red); 4 serving size
2 Jello(Orange); 4 serving
2 Jello(Lemon); 4 serving
2 Jello(Lime); 4 serving
2 Jello(Berry Blue); 4 serving
8 oz Cool whip

Stir 1 1/4 cups boiling water into each flavor of gelatin in separate bowls until completely dissolved (2 minutes).

Pour each flavor into separate 8 or 9" square pans.

Refrigerate 3 hours or until firm.

Cut each pan into 1" cubes.

Arrange rows of different color gelatin cubes to form a rainbow on a large flat tray or cookie sheet.

Double stack cubes, if desired.

Place 1/2 of the cool whip at each end of the rainbow to form clouds for dipping.

Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Pine Cone Mobile

For the pinecone mobile the materials needed are 10-15 pinecones, black strong string, a glue gun, and some thin strong sticks or wooden stakes of length 10 - 25cm.

At each end of the sticks about .5cm from the end, make small grooves with a knife. Take two pinecones, and a string of length of 10 cm.

Glue the end of the string to the end of the pinecone, using lots of glue.

Tie the other end around the end of the stick, putting the thread into the groove to prevent it from slipping.

Repeat the last step, and tie the other pinecone to the other end of the stick. Now the whole process can be repeated. Now you should have 2 sticks with 2 pinecones attached on each.

Now find the center of balance of each stick by balancing it on your finger, at the center make a small groove and tie a string to it.

Then you can take a longer stick, and at one end tie this stick with two pinecones, and on the other end take a long string with a pinecone and attach it there.

Now you can continue like this attaching more pairs together, as many as you want, always balancing the pieces until your mobile is the desired size.

For the top piece, tie a string in the center and make a loop so it can be hung on the ceiling in some place of the house.

A variation is to spray-paint the pinecones different colors to make it more cheerful. Enjoy your beautiful, sweet smelling mobile!

“Discipline away from Home”

I’m sure we all know how well behaved our children are while in their glory, I suppose probably one of the best places to see this attraction, would have to be in the checkout isle. If you haven’t seen one of these performances I’m a bit surprised.

Children seem to know exactly when the best time for a show is and where to perform them. This show usually starts something like this.

“Mum, can I have one of those.” And after being told “No.” “But why not, you always buy johnny things.” “Not today peter, I told you before we got here.” “I want one.” And so on.

Once the tempo speeds up, most of the people in the line are now looking at you with their heads shaking and their mouths flapping away. At this stage your temperature is starting to rise, not to mention your child’s tears rolling.

You can tell almost exactly what the people in the line are saying to each other. “Can’t you do something with that child.” “Why don’t you just buy the stupid thing.” “People like you shouldn’t be allowed in this shop.” And really, what are you supposed to do?

You could try and see if anyone has lost a spoilt brat, or just say you’re only a long lost relative who has him for the day, then again, you could say you just found him, would you like him? Chances are, people will look at you like you need help.

The most likely thing that would happen is for him to forget all about the item five seconds after you both leave the store. The reality is that you cant exactly look them in the eye, and in your meanest voice tell them “You just better be quiet.”

You could always just turn around and go home but, not only do you miss all the fun of paying those bills and running the other errands. But you teach your child that if you’re out somewhere he doesn’t like, all he has to do is act up enough knowing full-well he will get to go home. You can bet that’s what the rest of the people in the line think.

I honestly think the best possible way to attack this situation is to tell the lovely young offender how it is going to be. After that, do absolutely nothing at all. Yep, sounds easy hay? Putting it into practice is a little more difficult.

No matter where the tantrum is to be thrown, this is the recommended solution. The less your child sees the tantrum affecting you, the less he is likely to have too many more attempts.

There are a few places you don’t particularly want your child to have a tantrum. Such as Church’s, at the Movies or a Fancy Restaurant. But the general public places are exactly that, PUBLIC places. Sure people don’t want to listen to any child having a tantrum but hay, it’s a public place.

For as long as children are born with their own personality, there is going to be tantrums while out in public.

People around you at the time would like you to do anything to shut your child up.

At this point you are already embarrassed because of your child’s behavior, so I would suggest calmly walk your attention seeking child to the car and remind him of the out in public behavior rules, then try again.

What about organising a street coffee morning.

Pop a postcard in your local shop window, calling for mums down your street to bring their kiddies to your house on a particular day.

All the children can play in the garden while the mums have a natter.

If it is sunny ask them to bring toys along too so all the kids can have a go with different equipment

HOW TO KNOW WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE READY TO HAVE CHILDREN

MESS TEST
Smear peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Place a fish stick behind the couch and leave it there all summer.

TOY TEST
Obtain a 55-gallon box of LEGGOs (or you may substitute roofing tacks). Have a friend spread them all over the house. Put on a blindfold. Try to walk to the bathroom or kitchen. Do not scream because this would wake a child at night.

GROCERY STORE TEST
Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage.

DRESSING TEST
Obtain one large, unhappy, live octopus. Stuff it into a small net bag making sure that all the arms stay inside.

FEEDING TEST
Obtain a large plastic milk jug. Fill halfway with water. Suspend from the ceiling with a cord. Start the jug swinging. Try to insert spoonfuls of soggy cereal into the mouth of the jug, while pretending to be an airplane. Now dump the contents of the jug on the floor.

NIGHT TEST
Prepare by obtaining a small cloth bag and fill it with 8-12 pounds of sand. Soak it thoroughly in water. At 3:00 p.m. begin to waltz and hum with the bag until 9:00 p.m. Lay down your bag and set your alarm for 10:00 p.m. Get up, pick up your bag, and sing every song you have ever heard. Make up about a dozen more and sing these too until 4:00 a. m. Set alarm for 5:00 a.m. Get up and make breakfast. Keep this up for 5 years. Look cheerful.

INGENUITY TEST
Take an egg carton. Using a pair of scissors and pot of paint, turn it into an alligator. Now take a toilet paper tube and turn it into an attractive Christmas candle. Use only scotch tape and a piece of foil. Last, take a milk carton, a Ping-Pong ball, and an empty box of Cocoa Puffs. Make an exact replica of the Eiffel Tower.

AUTOMOBILE TEST
Forget the BMW and buy a station wagon. Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment. Leave it there. Get a dime. Stick it into the cassette player. Take a family size package of chocolate chip cookies. Mash them into the back seat. Run a garden rake along both sides of the car. There, perfect.

PHYSICAL TEST (Women)
Obtain a large bean bag chair and attach it to the front of your clothes. Leave it there for 9 months. Now remove 10 of the beans.

PHYSICAL TEST (Men)
Go to the nearest drug store. Set your wallet on the counter. Ask the clerk to help himself. Now proceed to the nearest food store. Go to the head office and arrange for your paycheck to be directly deposited to the store. Purchase a newspaper. Go home and read it quietly for the last time.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT
Find a couple who already have a small child. Lecture them on how they can improve their discipline, patience, tolerance, toilet training and child's table manners. Suggest many ways they can improve. Emphasize to them that they should never allow their children to run wild. Enjoy this experience. It will be the last time you will have all the answers.
