A-B-C Journal is a Way to Get Kids Ready for Bed
Sticking to a bedtime routine with kids is difficult any time of
year, but summer months challenge every parent no matter how hard
you try! "Oh, Mom, just one more . . . pleeeze?" is a standard
plea every evening, whether begging to take another bike ride
around the block or to watch the final innings of a baseball game
on TV. You know the routine. When your 5-year-old gets to bed
too late, the whole family suffers the next day from his sleep
deprivation.
Here's a great idea to solve the bedtime-blues dilemma: Make a
summertime "ABC Journal." While it still may be hard to get your
child inside on bright summer nights, this project is a great
"wind-down" activity your child will look forward to.
To make the ABC Journal, pick up a medium-size spiral notebook,
pens, colored pencils, crayons, markers, stickers and a glue
stick. Corral the items in a large, zipper-style plastic bag or
cloth tote bag.
On the cover of the notebook, your child can print "MY BEDTIME
JOURNAL" or "ALL ABOUT MY DAY." Rather than organizing the
journal by the days of the week, write one letter of the alphabet
at the top of each page, beginning with A and ending with Z.
At bedtime, discuss with your child the events of the day.
Through the conversation, your child will recollect special
moments that can be noted and illustrated in the journal. For
example, if your cat had kittens, print "kittens" on the "K"
page. Then, using the art supplies and stickers, create a
picture to illustrate the event or activity.
If you have souvenirs from an outing that day, glue a ticket
stub, program or picture to the page. Mom, Dad or an older
sibling may write the date of the entry at the bottom of each
page.
As the summer days go by, your child may enjoy sharing the
journal with siblings, friends or a visiting grandparent. You
might also want to save it for a great show-and-tell item when
school starts in the fall, then tuck it away as a keepsake to be
enjoyed in years to come.
Other ideas:
Pages can tear out of a spiral notebook with no way to put them
back. If I were creating an A-B-C Journal, I would use a
colorful 3-ring binder with 3-hole loose-leaf paper. That way if
the holes tear you can buy hole reinforcements and put them back
together.
Using loose-leaf paper also will allow you to add sheets, if
necessary, to a lettered page (i.e., "C" for Cat or "K" for
kitten), which can fill up quickly over the summer.
Include in your journal each day what your cat did that day that
was funny or especially cute or sweet.
Glue pictures you took of your cat or draw a picture of a funny
thing your cat did, or of a new toy you bought for your cat that
day.
And, finally, if your cat did have kittens, I am sure there will
soon be a page devoted to your trip to the vet to get her "fixed"!

Predictability
If asking couples the factors involved in the demise of their relationship, one of the common responses is that everything in the relationship is so predictable.
When rebuilding a relationship, do not be afraid of letting go of boredom. If you normally hate the fact that Saturday afternoons consist of your mate sitting for hours watching football, fix some finger sandwiches and something cool to drink and go join them on the couch, or if your mate spends hours in the garden trying to make things look perfect, surprise them with a new flowering plant, and then help to plant it.
When taking a walk with your mate, stop and give them a soft kiss, say, “I love you,” and then keep walking. Take some chances and do the unexpected.
Lighten Up
Often when couples have gone through or are going through some bumpy spots in their relationship, things tend to get serious. It could be that there is a tremendous amount of tension or perhaps they are not sure what to say.
Regardless of the reason, learn to lighten up. Do not take every comment, glance, or movement as a serious problem. If your mate makes a mistake, which you both will, let it go, or if appropriate, laugh about it.
If you make a mistake, do not be afraid to poke fun at yourself. This will automatically start the process of tension breaking.
DID YOU EVER WONDER ...
Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why you never see the headline, "Psychic Wins Lottery"?
Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?
Why doctors call what they do "practice"?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and
dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
How come you never see mouse-flavored cat food?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?
You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes?
Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!
Do sheep shrink when it rains?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?
