Inspiring Parenting Quotes:

"Being touched and caressed, being massaged, is food for the infant; food as necessary as minerals, vitamins, and proteins. Deprived of this food, the name of which is love, Babies would rather die. And often they do."
- Frederick Leboyer

"I always wondered why babies spend so much time sucking their thumbs. Then I tasted "baby food."
- Robert Orben

Kids Activities:

FreeToddlersActivity&DisciplineGuide Not only do kids of all ages love to play games, games are a creative and inexpensive way to entertain children. With a little imagination you will soon have them making up their own games!

Whether you're looking for birthday party games or just something to keep the little ones busy for a little while, I think you'll find these games easy to learn and fun for all ages.

Living Sculptures
Divide the children up into pairs.

One person gets to be the clay, and the other person gets to be the sculptor.

The sculptor molds the clay into any shape they want to (without hurting the clay).

Faces can be arranged into odd expressions, arms and legs can be bent and arranged, and heads can be turned or tipped.

When all the sculptors are finished with their creations, they get to put their sculptures on display.

The pairs get to switch places after the exhibit.

12 lg Three-ring pretzels
6 tb Peanut butter or cream cheese
About 18 raisins or currents

Using plastic knives, cut the celery into thirds.

Fill each celery stalk with one tablespoon of either peanut butter or cream cheese.

For the wings, gently push 1 pretzel into the filling, running parallel to the length of the celery stick.

Do the same on the celery's other lengthwise side.

Arrange the raisins or currents as the eyes, nose and mouth.

For antennae, push the slivered almonds or mushroom cap into filling.

If using mushrooms, arrange the spaghetti-like mushroom tips upward, like an antenna.

“Design your own Thanksgiving placemats”

Crafting and designing your own placemats is an easy way to add a personal, yet festive feel to your Thanksgiving dinner table.

Children can also design special placemats to give as gifts or participate in the holidays.

WALK IN NATURE PLACEMAT

These easy-to-construct placemats are made with a little help from Mother Nature and parents. Take small children on a special walk to gather supplies first. Since there is ironing involved, children should be supervised.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Wax paper

Leaves, twigs, sand, flowers, etc.

Iron

1. Cut two pieces of wax paper to your desired size.

2. Place one sheet of wax paper on a table or work area and allow children to place nature items on the paper in their own design.

3. Once finished, place the second sheet of wax paper over the first, lining up the edges as closely as you can.

4. Iron the wax paper together.

5. Trim edges so that your place has no frays or loose ends.

TIPS, TRICKS, AND HINTS

HAVE children write their name on a small piece of colored construction paper and place in between wax paper before ironing.

Grandparents and friends will treasure the placemat as a "special" gift from their loved one.

You can also include a date or photo of the child before ironing.

ADD a few pieces of colored yarn or construction paper to add color to your placemat. Yarn can be arranged to form a word, letter, or design.

THANKFUL PLACEMATS

These fun-to-design placemats are perfect for teaching your children the meaning of Thanksgiving.

You'll be using wax paper again to seal in your design, so some parental supervision and help will be necessary. Small children should use child-safe scissors and markers.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Old newspapers and magazines

Construction paper

Wax paper

Scissors

Crayons or markers

1. Page through old magazines and newspapers with children. Have children locate things they are thankful for. Clip pictures, photos, and words from newspapers and magazines and set aside.

2. Tear two sheets of wax paper to desired size.

3. Have children place cutouts on to the wax paper.

4. Once finished, place second sheet of wax paper on top of the first and iron together.

5. Trim edges to make placemat appealing.

TIPS, TRICKS, AND HINTS

USE craft scissors with designer blades to shape the edges of the placemat.

CLEAR contact paper can be used in place of wax paper.

CHILDREN can write a special note to parents or grandparents and place it in the placemat design, as well.

LEAFY FUN

By coloring over leaves which have been placed between two sheets of paper, you can design festive, leave printed placemats. This project is exciting for small and older children and takes only a short amount of time to complete. Before beginning, go on a quick nature walk to find freshly fallen leaves in good condition.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

White paper

Scissors

Crayons

Contact paper

1. Place a single leaf in between two sheets of white paper.

2. Gently rub a crayon over the outer sheet of paper, coloring in the area where the leaf is. (If you do this properly, the shape and pattern of the leaf will begin to show through your color markings.)

3. Repeat as many times as you like, using the same top sheet of paper.

4. When finished, place sheet of paper with leaf designs on it in between two sheets of wax paper and iron together. (Contact paper can also be used.)

5. Trim edges.

TIPS, TRICKS, AND HINTS

LEAF designs can be cut from colored construction paper and placed in between the contact paper for a "cleaner" looking placemat.

MATCHING name or gift tags can be made by coloring leaves on smaller pieces of paper and then writing a name in the center of the leaf design and placing on the table.

TURKEY HAND PLACEMATS

By tracing their own hand with a crayon on to a sheet of colored construction paper, children can easily draw and design their own turkey placemat.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Colored construction paper

Scissors

Crayons or markers

Wax paper or contact paper

1. Set out a single piece of construction paper on a flat work area.

2. Have child place their hand on the center of the paper and trace the outline of their hand print.

3. Once done, this outline will serve as your turkey body. The thumb will be the turkeys head and the four fingers will serve as feathers and plumes. Have child color in the turkeys body, eyes, and feathers.

4. Draw legs for your turkey and a gizzard.

5. When finished, place turkey in between two sheets of contact paper or wax paper. If using wax paper, iron together.

6. Trim edges.

CORN COB DESIGNER PLACEMATS

Using an ear of corn, you can paint your own colorful design to mix and match for the holidays!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

(1) Ear of corn

Corn cob holders (or large nails or pins)

Fabric paints

Fabric

1. Choose your fabric. You can buy plain white placemats to design or use equal sized pieces of white scrap fabric. Make all placemats a uniform size and place them on a flat working area.

2. Cut corn cob so that you have a center piece approximately 2-inches wide, and then attach corn cob holders. (If corn cob holders aren't available, use two large pins or nails.)

3. Drizzle a small amount of fabric paint on to a piece of wax paper, paper plate, or similar flat object. If you'll be using multiple colors, have all your paints ready before proceeding.

4. Dip corn cob into paint so that a small portion of the cob is covered in your desired color.

5. Roll corn cob across placemat until desired effect is achieved. You can continue to dip the corn cob into different shades of paint to mix and match colors or rinse the cob off between rollings.

6. If fabric paint needs to be heat-set, follow label instruction to complete. If not, allow paint to dry and enjoy!

“7 Little Things That You Can do to Organize the Kids' Rooms”

1. Sink to their level.

Get on your knees in their room to view things from a kid's level. Convenience is an important factor in getting anyone to organize or put things away. Lower clothing racks in the closet. Put most frequently used items on the lowest shelves and in the lowest drawers. Set up decorative, short open bins, crates, baskets and boxes in corners, on closet floors and at the foot of the bed.

2. Hide stuff under the bed.

Use flat, rectangular storage bins on wheels that are made for under-the-bed storage. Designate one of these for Barbie dolls and another for mini toy cars. Store your children's artwork including construction paper and crayons in one of the bins. Older children can store schoolwork and notebooks here. Got music lovers? They can keep a pile of CDs handy here.

3. Make organizing fun.

Organizing can be a drag even for "big people." Imagine how your child feels at the thought of clearing away his toys, clothes and school work. Get your children involved by letting them creatively label their own drawers and bins. They can make personalized drawings as labels. Or you can take photos of your child with an object that goes in the drawer and tape it to the front of the bin or drawer. Is the drawer supposed to hold small toy soldiers? Tape a small clear plastic pocket to the outside of the drawer that's stuffed with an example of the contents such as one toy soldier. You can buy notebook plastic sleeves (also called sheet protectors) from any office supply store. Then just cut them to the size needed. Use clear shipping tape to attach labels to bins. Put a laundry hamper under a kid size basketball hoop.

4. Keep drawers shallow.

The deeper the drawer, the more kids will fill it. With a few exceptions for big bulky items, use shallow drawers. Some narrow storage carts on wheels come with five or six shallow drawers. You can roll the cart into the closet if needed or line several in a row against a wall. Fill deeper drawers with mini-organizers such as small trays, tins, recycled cardboard boxes and more. Don't use lids on the mini-organizers; that's just a hassle for kids to find their items and remember to put the lids back on each item. Use makeshift cardboard dividers to separate things in drawers--like socks.

5. Color code it.

Buy blue bins for Barbie dolls and red bins for fire trucks. Put summer clothing on green hangers and Sunday dress outfits on blue hangers. Or use different colors for different children. Suzy gets blue bins and hangers and Sandy gets red bins and hangers.

6. Hang it.

Your children might view their collection of self-created artwork in much the same way as you view your collection of store-bought artwork. Buy inexpensive frames and hang drawings in a clustered artistic layout on one wall in your child's room. It adds a decorative and personalized element. Put up a cork/bulletin board for the kids to hang ribbons and medals from field days, school spirit events and competitions. Another cork board can be for photos. Or hang a rectangular vertical homemade fabric organizer with pockets beside the door to hold photos, souvenir card collections and birthday cards through the years.

7. Set ground rules.

For example, before you play another board game, you must first put this board game away. Before each gift-giving season, you must pick one item to donate to a non-profit organization; it brings a smile to the face of a child with less than you. You can only keep things in your room that have a place. So if a drawer is full and you want to keep something new, you must discard something from the drawer (for example, an old piece of artwork for a new piece of artwork or an old broken toy for a new one).

Life Reflections

• If you're too open-minded, your brains will fall out.

• Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

• Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, if he gets angry, he'll be a mile away - and barefoot.

• Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you a mechanic.

• Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

• A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

• A closed mouth gathers no feet.

• If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before.

• My idea of housework is to sweep the room with a glance.

• I have found at my age going bra-less pulls all the wrinkles out of my face.

• If you look like your passport picture, you probably need the trip.

• Always yield to temptation, because it may not pass your way again.

• Bills travel through the mail at twice the speed of checks.

• A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.

• Eat well, stay fit, die anyway.

• Men are from earth. Women are from earth. Deal with it.

• No husband has ever been shot while doing the dishes
