Inspiring Quotes:

"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." - Ralph Waldo Emerson "You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land, there is no other life but this." - Henry David Thoreau "The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain." - Dolly Parton

Sandpit Zoo

Young children are fascinated with toddlers activity zoos. Help your children make a toddlers activity toy animal zoo in the sand pit.

What You Need:

• Toy zoo animals

• Boxes

• Polystyrene cups

• Scissors

• Poster or acrylic paints

• Drinking straws

• Sticky tape

• Small pieces of plants

• Jar lids

What To Do:

If your children haven’t been to the zoo yet, take them along.

After your toddlers visit to the zoo, help them make their own toddlers activity zoo in the sandpit. Help your children cut holes in the boxes and cups to make animal homes; they will enjoy putting the finishing toddler’s activity touch with painting them.

Next, sticky tape the straws together to make fences for your toddler’s sandpit zoo.

Use a piece of card to smooth down paths for the visitors to walk along, and then add plants and flowers to make the toddlers activity gardens.

Help the children fill the lids with water and bury them in the sand to make ponds and drinking pools for the zoo animals.

Arrange the animals in the zoo and leave the children to have a great time playing with their toddler’s activity sandpit zoo.

Felt Names

A great gift idea for new babies or kids of all ages is to have their name on the bedroom door.

This project is rated AVERAGE to do.

What You Need

• Felt of any colour

• Matching thread and needle

• Scissors

• Fabric marker

• Toy stuffing

How To Make It

1. Write the letters (about 10cm high) onto the felt (doubled over) with the fabric marker. (I actually printed out the alphabet on my computer and use them as templates.)

2. Cut the letters out and blanket stitch the two halves together leaving a gap to stuff.

3. Using a knitting needle or pencil gently stuff small amounts of toy filling into the letters to make them puffy, then finish stitching up. (Hint: With really curvy letters such as S it is easier to stuff a small amount as you stitch around.)

4. When all the letters are finished, decide how the letters should be joined together.

5. Working at the back of the letters, stitch the letters together only where they join.

6. This bluetak (kneadable, adhesive putty) to the wall really easily, or if wool yarn is sewn to the first and last letter, could be hung that way.

Variations...

• Use a different colour for every letter.

Put a shape on the ends of the name e.g.. hearts or stars.

The Smallest Things Mean Everything

by Catie Gosselin of WomanLinks.com

Summer has come full blast to New England, and with it, humidity that forces one's hair to triple in size. Some days it is like living in a steam bath.

When the weather becomes oppressive, it is hard to find motivation to do much of anything. Sticking one's head in the freezer for momentary relief is the highlight of the day.

This past weekend, however, we ventured out despite horrific humidity and on-again off-again showers. We spent the day at a cookout, playing mini-golf, riding bumper boats and watching the kids fly around inside a moon bouncer. Oh, of course, there was ice cream involved as well.

So, there I was, playing mini-golf with my oldest, feeling like a faded daisy wrapped in a soggy sponge. As I'm complaining to myself and wondering if my feet could possibly hurt more, he looks up after sinking the ball with a huge missing-some-teeth grin and gives a thumbs up.

I mean this kid was beaming, and heat exhaustion had nothing to do with it. I'm ready to keel over and he is having the time of his life on the putt-putt course.

We spent the whole afternoon puttering from one attraction to the next, weathered a downpour under a party tent, and went out for more. When it was time to come home, I gratefully trekked to the car, welcoming the frigid blast of the air conditioner.

Wondering whether I should bother throwing something together for dinner since we were all full of barbeque, I overheard my youngest tell my husband "I'm going to remember this day for the rest of my life!"

A day that felt like an obstacle course for me was utter bliss for the boys. It didn't matter that they were sweaty, sticky and tired. The moments of the day were all that mattered.

That it was uncomfortable, hot and muggy had no affect on their enjoyment. What mattered was finally sinking a golf-ball after trying so many times, figuring out how to steer a bumper boat or the feeling of digging into a cold dish of coffee Oreo-cookie ice cream. It was a good day because small moments of pleasure were more important than any discomfort or obstacles. Everything else was incidental...kind of the way life should be.

Editor’s notes & humour:

FreeToddlersActivity&DisciplineGuide

From the mouths of babes...

SCHOOL: A little girl had just finished her first week of school. "I'm just wasting my time," she said to her mother. "I can't read, I can't write and they won't let me talk!"

OPINIONS: On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, "The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents."

BIBLE: A little boy opened the big family bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. "Mama, look what I found," the boy called out." "What have you got there, dear?" With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!"

DRESS-UP: A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, "Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit." "And why not, darling?" "You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning."
