Inspiring Quotes:

"No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave." - Calvin Coolidge "Worry is like a rocking chair - it gives you something to do, but it doesn't get you anywhere." - Dorothy Galyean "We would worry less about what others think of us if we realized how seldom they do." - Ethel Barrett

Board Games for Preschoolers

by Heidi Hoff

Many of us have tattered boxes of board games from our childhoods in the attic waiting for the day when our children are old enough to play. I have a vintage Trouble game from the 70's that I play with my four-year-old daughter, even though the bubble is coated on the inside with twenty years worth of dust, making it hard to tell if she's just popped a 5 or a 6. This past Christmas, Santa brought Emily a few board games and she plays them with enjoyment. Our family is now addicted, and before heading out to the toy store to add to her collection, I did a bit of research to find some of the best board games for preschoolers:

1. Goodnight Moon Game by Briarpatch: If the book is in your child's library, then the board game will be popular too. It is a memory and matching game that doesn't require the players to recognize letters or numbers. In this game, everybody wins so if your Suzy isn't a very gracious loser, the Goodnight Moon Game will suffice until she learns how to accept defeat. For ages 3-6 years.

2. Maisy's Counting Game by Briarpatch: Focuses on learning how to count by matching puzzle pieces. This game can be adjusted according to age and skill level and can be played three different ways. It won the Parents Magazine award in 1997. For ages 3-6 years.

3. Franklin Goes to School - The Game by Pressman: This game has a wide age range making it possible for siblings to play together. The questions are divided into age appropriate categories and also touch on basic social values. Various skills such as spelling, observation and counting are focused on. For ages 3-8 years.

4. I Spy Preschool Game by Briarpatch: Good value for your money as this game can be played five different ways. It is a visual matching game that requires the players to find clues through rhyming and visual discrimination. It won the Parents Magazine Award in 1998 and Parents' Choice Approved 1998. For ages 3-6 years.

5. Colorforms Silly Faces Preschool Game by University Games: A fun, goofy game with no pressure of cards or dice to play. Spin and add the feature that you land on to your blank face and watch the silliness appear! The first person to complete a face wins. A great game for children to play on their own while the siblings are in school. For ages 3-7 years.

6. Mouse Trap by Milton Bradley: When your preschooler reaches the age when they're too old for some games and too young for others, Mouse Trap seems to work as a good transitional game. My daughter doesn't exactly stick to the rules and, instead, rushes through the building process because she finds the end result so fascinating. I just view it as a great introduction to the world of physics! Ages 6+ years.

7. Memory Games: I've always loved the "match the picture" type of memory games and there are several on the market to choose from. Here are some of the more popular ones: Original Memory Game by Milton Bradley

Pooh Memory Game by Hasbro Barney Memory Game by Milton Bradley Mickey and Friends Memory Game by Hasbro I Spy Memory Game by Briarpatch Arthur Memory Game by Milton Bradley Busy Train Memory Game by Living and Learning Maisy's Memory Game by Briarpatch Pokemon Memory Game by Hasbro

You may already have a collection of games that your family likes to gather around the table to play. Perhaps you also have a few classics lurking in the back of your closet. The best thing about games is the way they bring families together. Why not start a tradition and have a game night once a week, starting tonight! Author Heidi Hoff is editor of Preschool Planet. Easy Kids Recipe:

Edible Eggs

Mom or Dads help might be needed.

Ingredients

• 1 cup soft butter
• 2 tsp salt
• 4 tsp vanilla
• 1 can condensed milk (Eagle Brand)
• 10 cups icing sugar
• 1 tsp. yellow food coloring
• 1 lb. semisweet chocolate
Method

Beat butter, salt and vanilla until fluffy. Add milk, beat in sugar. Blend until stiff. Dust with brown sugar. Knead til smooth.

Set aside more then 2/3 of mixture.* To the remaining mixture add yellow food coloring. Blend in well. Divide yellow and white into 16 or 24 pieces. Shape yellow into ball, mould white around yellow to form an egg shape. Dry at room temperature on paper towels for 24 hours.

Melt chocolate in double boiler or in microwave until smooth. Dip eggs in chocolate. (paraffin wax may be added and melted with chocolate to prevent chocolate from melting in your hands). Once dipped cool at room temperature. Refrigerate after cool.

When sliced these eggs will have a white cream filling with a yellow filling that appears to be the yolk. They look nice sitting in an Easter basket!!

Variations

*Use the 2/3 of cream mixture above to make variations

Orange
Add one teaspoon orange flavoring and a few drops of red and yellow food coloring to cream mixture. Kneed well to get smooth color and flavor.

Cherry
Add one teaspoon cherry flavoring and a few drops of red food coloring to cream mixture. Kneed well to get smooth color and flavor. Finely chopped bits of maraschino cherries can be added.

Maple Walnut
Add one teaspoon maple flavoring to cream mixture. Kneed well to get smooth color and flavor. Add about 1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts. Kneed in well.

Peanut Butter
Cream 1 cup of peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of butter, 1 cup confectioners sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp of vanilla in bowl. Kneed until smooth. Roll into oval shapes and allow to dry overnight. Dip in chocolate as above.

“Halloween Craft Ideas”

Are you looking to make some Halloween crafts with your kids? Here's a bunch of ideas for under ten dollars!

This is the perfect answer for that slow afternoon when everyone is bored, a couple of cups of hot cider and a few sugar cookies will help everyone into a festive mood.

This will tell you how to make a dozen or more Halloween crafts. Making these Halloween felt magnets is a project that children as young as three can help with and even teenagers could enjoy. After you finish your shopping get ready for an afternoon filled with silly giggles and sticky fingers.

You're going to need a jumbo size pack of multi-colored felt squares-I bought mine for three-dollars-and-ninety-cents.

You will also want a package of plastic puppet eyes, ninety-nine cents for thirty. Make sure you get smaller sized eyes! You are also going to need magnets.

I bought a twenty-four inch roll for a dollar-ninety-nine. You simply cut off the size you need and go from there. I'm assuming you have shears and glue at home, any glue (except super glue) will work sufficently.

The first thing now that the shopping is finished is your patterns. You can use your printer to get them or if you want simply free hand draw them.

A few notes to keep in mind: with younger children larger patterns work better-they're easier for small hands to decorate. Always wait until the face of your magnet is dry before gluing on the magnet-otherwise it might smear.

With all of these you can make as many or as few as you want-just cut out the appropriate number of patterns. You can use your own ideas or follow these guides.

Jack-O-Lanters -- Using your pattern, cut out your pumpkin shapes. You should use orange felt. Now, using black felt cut out two triangles for each's eyes, a smaller triangle for the nose and a set of jagged teeth. Simply glue the cut pieces to the pumpkin then attach a small piece of magnet on the back. Happy Jack-O-Lanterns!

Leaves -- You can use various colors for these, green, brown, yellow and orange. You want your leaves to be about a inch and a half long. Cut out the leaves then assign each two eyes then let the kids choose the rest. Don't forget to glue your magnet on the back. Maybe the leaves will have a purple nose and no mouth but you'll have smiles and new refrigerator decorations!

Ghosts -- Using white felt cut out the ghost shapes. They should be about an inch-and-a-half tall, naturally each ghost will need two eyeballs and once again-let the kids do it!

A few suggestions, different colored strands of hair and funky shoes look neat! Glue a small piece of magnet to the back. Now you can go on using the materials to create even more Halloween magnets.

Flying witches, black cats, skulls, skeletons, Frankenstein, scary faces, scarecrows, spiders and witch faces. If you have other craft stuff at home-toss it in and come up with even more! Ask your children for their ideas, usually they'll give you a few worth doing. Most importantly, have fun. Laugh with your children and encourage their own creativity!

“Poem for Parents”

There are little eyes upon you,
And they are watching night and day;
There are little ears that quickly
Take in every word you say.

There are little hands all eager
To do everything you do;
and a little boy who's dreaming
Of the day he'll be like you.

You're the little fellow's idol;
You're the wisest of the wise;
In his little mind, about you
No suspicions ever rise.

He believes in you devotedly,
Holds that all you say and do,
He will say and do in your way
When he's grown up like you.

There's a wide-eyed little fellow
Who believes you're always right;
And his ears are always open,
And he watches day and night.

You are setting an example
Every day in all you do;
For the little boy who's waiting
To grow up to be just like you.

The Captain's Parrot

A magician worked on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience was different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again.

There was only one problem: the captain's parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, the parrot started shouting in the middle of the show, "Look, it's not the same hat!" or "He's hiding the flowers under the table!" and "Hey, why are all those cards the ace of spades?"

The magician was furious but couldn't do anything. It was, after all, the captain's parrot.

One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the sea with, as fate would have it, the parrot.

They stared at each other with hatred, but did not utter a word.

This went on for a day, then another.

Finally the parrot couldn't hold back any longer and squalked, "OK, I give up? What'd you do with the ship?"
