A Better Grasp of Toddler Tantrums

When a child reaches the toddler stage, it is probably the most unique stage of their development. They begin to recognize changes in their feelings, but are unable to communicate properly what they feel. They do not have the language skills necessary to communicate their feelings and this leaves them feeling totally frustrated. The frustration leads to temper tantrums, an outlet for the frustrations.

When you think about it, babies only know to express themselves through bouts of crying. Toddlers are the same, they shriek in varying degrees of intensity to draw attention to their situation. Every time your toddler is experiencing unpleasant feelings it is going to result in crying. This negative behavior is a totally natural response to whatever anger or frustration the child feels.

For parents, the temper tantrums are frustrating and stressful. Coping with a small, demanding child constantly can be very trying especially when you are not sure what is making the child upset. Excessive shrieking displays of temper in a little child will drain even a parent with Job’s patience.

Tantrums are going to happen; that’s a given because it’s the toddler’s outlet for those fierce little emotions and feelings. But there are ways in which parents can ensure that the frequency of the tantrums is reduced.

The good news is that while toddlers may not be able to properly explain what they want or feel, they have better powers of understanding at this age. A toddler can understand well enough what is being said to it.

As a parent, you can reduce the number of tantrums your toddler throws in a day by ensuring that it is not hungry, sleepy or put in stressful situations. The parent needs to remain calm and talk in an even tone to the child to show understanding of the situation. For example, if your toddler is throwing a tantrum at its meal time, you know full well that the child is hungry.

You can talk to your shrieking child, telling it all about the yummy stuff you have for its lunch. Ask the child whether it would like an apple or an orange after lunch to get the focus away from the crying. You can see how important it is that the parent remains calm. Your anger or frustration can easily be seen by a little child and this only serves to make things worse.

Since the language gap is responsible for most of the frustration, talking to your little one in a soothing, loving tone goes a long way toward bridging this gap.
