Activities For Grandparents and Grandkids

Whether you're fortunate enough to have your grandchildren visit you weekly or you only get to see them a few times a year, it's a chance to build strong bonds and create great memories together.

But sometimes you're not sure what to do with them. You don't want them to spend all day glued to the TV watching who-knows-what these days, you want them to interact with you and the world around them. This is true no matter what their ages are.

Here are a few ideas of what you and your grandchildren can do together. Go ahead and try the ones that sound the best to you and your situation, and then think up some more of your own.

Puzzles
Color pictures, then glue stick them to cardboard backing. Cut the pictures up into interesting puzzle shapes. Alternately, you can go online and create all types of puzzles.

Cooking
Baking cookies is a favorite activity, but you can take it a step further and help the grandkids make up a recipe of their own. They'll be so proud to serve it to you!

You and the young ones can also create a family cookbook. Depending on age, have them write out some of the family's favorite recipes and add pretty stickers to each page. Laminate them and put them in a notebook. While working on this, you can tell stories of where the recipes came from and add colorful bits of history.

Garden
If the kids visit you often, you can assist them in planting a small garden of their very own. Start with seed or seedlings and teach them how to weed and fertilize the plot. Then show them how to eat any veggies they've grown straight from the garden.

Weird
Watch a scary movie, visit a wax museum or similar, or go to a haunted house. This is a hit with the preteens. You can also look up weird and funny YouTube videos on YouTube.com and have some good laughs together.

Kites
When was the last time you flew a kite? If the wind is strong, get going. You and the grandkids can even make your own kite. Not saying if it will fly right... that depends on your kite-making skills.

Tours
What is your grandkid interested in? There's probably a tour for that. Do some investigating and find out what's around town that might be fun and then call to find if they offer tours.

Scavenger Hunt
All kids like to explore and discover, no matter what their age. You can rig up a scavenger hunt to suit their age and interests.

Card Games
Now might be the time to teach your grandchildren all the card games you know. One at a time, of course. If the kids are real card sharks, maybe they would like to make up their own card game.

These ideas are just a spring-board. It will depend on the age of the children and what they like. These should get you started towards creating lasting bonds and memories.
