Approaching Toddler Tantrum Problems Right
Let’s begin by stating unequivocally that to a greater or lesser extent all toddlers have tantrums. They may be very bad, not so bad or somewhere in between. Temper tantrums are a problem with one to three year old children.
Your child will start to experience feelings around the year one mark and not be able to properly express said feelings right until the year three mark. There is nothing we can do to prevent the child from pulling hair, kicking, biting and hitting as part of the tantrum. What we can do is control the frequency of these occurrences and, perhaps even prevent some of them from happening.
Various factors are responsible for the beginning of a tantrum, from hunger to tiredness and plenty in between. For example, if your child is hungry he cannot really tell you in so many words, therefore he shows you. He may begin with crankiness or irritability and, as the hunger increases, so does the intensity of the tantrum, till it reaches a deafening crescendo complete with the kicking and hitting.
I would be the first to agree that watching your child bang his beautiful head on the floor is the worst possible thing for a parent. The first rule in dealing with toddler temper tantrums is to remain calm. No! I’m not crazy in saying this – I just know that the more panicked and worked up you get, the worse your child’s tantrum becomes.
So after you take a few deep calming breaths or drink a glass of water go to your child. Kneel on the floor beside the child and gently lift him up. His body will continue bucking and you will probably get a few kicks, so keep away from his legs if possible.
Look your child in the eye and ask if (add name) is hungry? As that’s usually the most common cause, you can avoid this from happening at all, if you set up a routine for feeding your child and stick to it.
Now tell your child what you have for lunch, preferably give two options and ask the child which one he would prefer. By this time you will notice that the kicking and hitting has stopped. Only the big tears in those beautiful eyes are left to be dried. My advice would be, do not take too long to get the child strapped into the chair and the food into his starving tummy.
