Avoiding Bedtime Temper Tantrums
Parents are in the enviable position of enjoying a very special gift; their children. But the growing years for some children can really be fraught with difficulties especially at meal and nap times. If you have a toddler with ‘going to bed’ difficulties please keep reading.
For parents with toddlers, the day is difficult enough without the added problem of bedtime battles. Some toddlers go off to bed without too much trouble while others can really be a lesson in frustration.
Consistency is essential to ensuring that bedtimes don’t end regularly in shrieking, yelling contests between you and your toddler. The going to bed and the waking up times both need to be constant. If your toddler goes to bed whenever and wakes up whenever, the lack of a structure is going to cause serious problems. In fact, the sooner you can get a schedule organized and established the better it’s going to be.
The second important factor you need to consider is the routine before going to bed. This has to be constant too, for things to make a real difference. For example, a regular routine that includes the bath, storytelling and then goodnight kiss will make a big difference to how easily your toddler goes off to sleep. If you keep varying things the child becomes confused, irritated, off course and ends up throwing a temper tantrum.
There are plenty of things to choose from to build your regular bedtime ritual. These include bath, storytelling, game play, singing to your child and many more. Just make sure that the activities you choose are soothing and calm rather than ones that only end up exciting the toddler.
Of course it’s very tempting to get into bed with your child. I mean who would not want to cuddle a soft, warm bundle of love. But this is not something recommended by the experts because instead of helping your child fall asleep, it tends to have the opposite effect of getting the child all excited, wide awake and ultimately irritable.
Establishing the right bedtime activities and routine is something that makes things a lot easier as the child grows up. If you haven’t really established a set time for getting your little one off to sleep, start today. You will soon find that the frequency of the temper tantrums reduces greatly as your child gets used to a set routine.
