Handling Temper Tantrums on Camping Trips
A camping holiday with the family sounds like a great plan, but remember you have a little toddler around. With small children there is a lot to be considered or you will end up on the wrong end of all those explosive temper tantrums.
A camping holiday brings to mind a relaxed, laid-back holiday lifestyle, ideal for small babies and toddlers. You can plan to stop wherever you choose, see what you want to see and generally do anything you please. Most campsites are great socializing sites for small children.
Going camping means you have your own space, your little one can bring whatever toys and games are needed to fill the travel time. No having to leave behind a favourite bear because it was too big to go on the plane, and then having a temper tantrum to deal with. If you choose your camping sites carefully, you will benefit from swimming pools and playgrounds throughout the trip, or at least for most of the trip.
Try to choose sites away from main roads, open water, rivers and railways; all of which are a danger to a little toddler who tends to wander off the moment you turn away for a second. If you plan to stay in just one place and not drive around any specific part of the country, make sure to get a nice shady spot to avoid the little one getting too much sun and heat.
Larger camp sites have more facilities such as swimming pools, children’s playground, in-house dining room and shops. Make sure to check out the medical facilities available for emergencies for small children.
Depending on the age of your toddler you need to check with the camp site for cots, baby baths, all terrain travel buggies, play tents and other facilities available.
If your trip is going to be spent in a mobile home, you need to look into getting items such as a stair-gate to close off the doorway for the baby, to limit his access down the steps and to the outside world. Your mobile home should have a refrigerator and microwave.
Don’t expect your baby to be happy in one place; find out about the nearest attractions such as the beach, a nice play area for small children, some kind of play centre and so on.
Some places ask you to bring your own linen and may charge for the use of the pool and other facilities.
This is just a rough guideline for going camping with a toddler, so ask around among friends to get more ideas.
Happy trails!
