Keep Your Cool: How to Deal with Toddler Tantrums

Children truly are a gift from above, but taking care of them isn't a walk in the park! It is hard to believe the little angel that is smiling so beatifically in her sleep was the same little demon who drove you to your wits' end a few hours ago. Even so, you don't have to let toddler tantrums get the best of you. Completely avoiding tantrums isn't possible, but you can cope with it without resorting to drastic measures. So, here are some tips that may help you in controlling this situation.

Toddlers don't know how to control their emotions, but you can. Let the temper run its course. That's right, ignore the child! Don't feel bad about not looking or speaking to him because there is nothing you can do stop the tantrum. Any response on your part will teach the toddler that tantrums get him what he wants. When you ignore a child throwing a tantrum, you are teaching him that toddler tantrums have no audience among civilized people. Tantrums will occur less frequently as the child grows and learns to manage his emotions.

While the child is giving vent to his emotions, ensure that his physical safety isn't compromised. Remove all breakable objects and anything with hard or sharp edges from the vicinity of your toddler. Don't move the child himself as he is likely to resist and cause injury to you both. If you are in a public area, immediately remove him from the scene, and his audience, to a quieter spot and wait for the storm to pass. Ignore any stares. You are not a bad parent because your child can't control himself.

Remain calm at all times. Don't reason, respond or offer compromises to deal with toddler tantrums. Screaming or scolding the child to be quiet will upset him even more and may actually set off another outburst. Reasoning is futile because the child is incapable of listening to reason when he's in paroxysms of impotent rage. However, be prepared to soothe the toddler once the worst of the tantrum has passed. Assure him that he's still a beloved child.

It is not easy to raise a child. As a parent, you have to take the bad behaviour with the good, but do your best to make them good human beings. Teach them the right way to act and the right behavior to carry out with patience.
