Parenting Tip Toddler Discipline | How To Leave The Playground Without Tears

Young children love to go to the playground and who can blame them? They get to swing, slide, and climb over and over again. Play structures are a great way for kids to learn so many things - large motor skills, socializing with other children, not to throw sand or it gets in their eyes. But at some point, it's time to go home. This time always comes before children are ready for it and tears and tantrums can often be the norm. Here are some techniques to make time to go a bit easier:

First off, please don't tell them you have to go because you need to run errands or it's time for their nap. This will definitely set you up for failure as these are not something your kids will look forward to. If you are going to be doing something next that they like then it's okay to tell them that. This is more like an honest bribe.

Before it's time to go, you should let your children know that pretty soon it will be time to go. Don't make it sound like a warning and don't make it sound like it's your idea. Make it Mr. Watch's plan. Show them your watch and tell them that when the big hand gets on the seven, it is time to leave the park.

Since young kids don't have a sense of time yet, you can let them know that they can probably get in 20 more swings back and forth, or 5 more times down the slide, etc. before it's time to go. When time's up, show them Mr. Watch and ask them to agree that the big hand is on the seven.

If your child is still dragging his/her feet, pick them up and walk/run them to each gym apparatus and tell them to say good-bye. Make it a silly game and you'll have your child laughing as he says farewell to the slide, then the swing, and then maybe blows the monkey bars a see-ya-later kiss. If you will be returning in a few days, be sure to let the child know that so he can tell the play structures!

Sometimes children don't know how to end something and don't realize that they can visit again real soon. Saying good-bye or see-ya-later helps them figure this out and leads to a less stressful departure from the park.
