Kindergarten is the first step in formal education. Mostkindergartens are part of the local public-school or privateschool systems. A few are extensions of nursery schools,designed especially for 5-year-olds.
In some localities,kindergarten attendance is mandated, though school attendance isnot usually law until a child has reached the age of 6. Becauseof the proliferation of nursery-school and preschool programs,kindergarten has undergone a radical change from just ageneration ago. Most children today arrive in kindergarten withsome experience in a classroom, so this year is no longer viewedas the single, formal preparatory event for first grade.
Becauseof that early exposure, the kindergarten curriculum is no longerfocused on introducing social skills, though these remain animportant part of the program. Academic skills, increasingly,are working their way into the kindergartner' s day, leaving lesstime for the appropriate play that was once the essence ofkindergarten.
Traditionally, reaching age 5 signaled readiness forkindergarten. In many areas, that has changed, and today parentsneed to learn about the kindergarten their child will attendbefore deciding when the time is right. To evaluate your child'sreadiness:
• Know the school's cutoff date. Traditionally that has beenage 5 by a specific birth date, such as June 30, September 1, orDecember 31, of the year in which the child is to begin school.Children who turn 5 after the cutoff date have to wait until thefollowing year to begin in such a publicly funded program. Somepublic and many private schools have earlier cutoffs, a fewgoing so far as to exclude those who have not turned 6 by thestart of kindergarten • Look at the curriculum Traditional kindergarten emphasizesplay and sets the stage for more academic learning byintroducing letter recognition and early arithmetic concepts,such as simple addition Class seating is informal, with childrengathered around shared tables. These are well-suited to childrenwho are close to age 5 at the start of the year or who may turn6 before the end of kindergarten.
• Consider the ages of the other children in the class Even avery mature 5-year-old will have difficulties in kindergarten ifmost of his classmates are 6. If the curriculum has beenadjusted to meet the developmental needs of 6-year-olds ratherthan the traditional kindergarten age of 5, a 5-year-old wouldhave additional pressures put on him. Likewise, a mature 6-yearold might do better in a first grade class rather than spendinga year in a traditional kindergarten class of mostly olderKindergartners.
Though exceptions certainly need to be made for maturity andother aspects of In areas where the entrance age fordevelopment, most kids do best with others kindergarten iscloser to 6, the kindergarten curriculum itself may resemblewhat was once the first grade curriculum. In effect, these olderkindergartners are offered a drawn-out first-grade curriculum,in which the academic skills once reserved for first grade areintroduced in kindergarten. The academic kindergarten isgenerally not appropriate for 5-year-olds.

Your child will be learning a lot more than the ABCs inkindergarten. She will grow socially as she practices hergetting-along skills. She will blossom emotionally as shebecomes more independent and secure. And she will expand heracademic horizons to include skills like reading, writing, math,and problem solving. During this exciting year, watch for signsof the following:
• Social skills: Kindergarten children are learning to becooperative and responsible members of a group. You'll see thatchildren who are ready for kindergarten are less self-centeredand begin to accept other children's ideas and incorporate themin play. They like to help each other and the group as a whole.Physical fighting won't happen as often because these childrenare now able to discuss their problems and are learning to usesocially acceptable ways of getting what they want like asking,trading, compromising, or substituting.
• Emotional development: Your kindergartner will experience andexperiment with a wide range of emotions. She may be giddy andhappy one minute and crying hysterically the next, butthroughout this year, she will be learning how to express thesefeelings appropriately and to relieve stress and tension throughwords, drawing, and physical play. This ability to channelemotions gives your child a sense of self control so she canbetter enjoy working with other children. Also during this year,kindergartners continue their quest for independence If allowed,your child will become more competent at making decisions anddoing things for herself. Kindergarten lets her reach out to theworld and be a part of it.
Academic learning The following skills are a sampling of theacademic skills your kindergartner will develop:
• Oral language skills Your child is learning more aboutlistening, speaking, telling stories, and expressing feelingsand ideas.
• Perceptual dissemination skills It's important at this age tobe able to recognize and identify shapes and colors and to findhidden shapes in pictures
• Comparison skills: Your child will learn to understand anduse words that describe time (before/after) , size(short/tall/ big/little) , position (over/under) , amount(most/least) , distance (here/there/ near/far); she will also usecomparatives (big/bigger/ biggest) and opposites(before/after/ up/down).
• Classification and sequencing skills: Kindergartners willspend lots of time learning to sort and classify according tosize, form, and function. They will also put things in order ofamount and according to time.
• Reading and writing skills: In kindergarten, your child willlearn to recognize letters, say the alphabet, write her ownname, and write ideas with pictures, scribbles, and inventedspelling. She will also learn to read her own writing, read hername, read certain sight words, and enjoy as many additionalreading adventures as her individualized talents allow.
• Math skills: The world of math opens up to kindergartners. Inaddition to recognizing, writing, and counting numbers, yourchild will come to understand what written and spoken numbersmean; she will use numbers to put pictures in order, to recordamounts and measurements, to do simple addition andsubtraction of concrete objects, and to use numbers and countingto solve problems.
• Problem-solving skills: Kindergartners have manyopportunities for flexing their ability to solve problems. Theywill learn to identify problems and solutions. They will learnto predict outcomes and think about cause and effect. They mayeven begin to use the scientific method to hypothesize, test,observe, and record results.
