Should we allow Homeschooling
Homeschooling has been gaining popularity over the years.
What is homeschooling? Simply stated, it means instead of sending a child to a formal school for their education, parents take it upon themselves to teach the child at home.
This is not a new concept. Parents have been teaching their children at home since time immemorial. The child’s first lessons come from the parents at home.
Parents teach the child to walk, to talk, to write and how to conduct themselves in gatherings. They teach the child the rudiments of the alphabet and counting numbers at an early age.
They expose the child to religious education by teaching them their first prayers and bringing them to religious services. They show the child the wonders of nature.
Even before the child reaches the age of five, he has learned many things from the parents. The question remains on whether the parents will continue homeschooling the child on elementary, middle school and high school subjects.
There are several benefits that can be derived from homeschooling. Parents can conduct one-on-one sessions with the child, unlike teachers who have to handle twenty to thirty children in the classroom.
Personal attention helps speed the development of a child. Children do not have to contend with others for the teacher’s attention, and they can ask questions freely and as often as needed to understand the lessons. Any difficulty in learning a subject can be readily addressed by the parents. There is relatively more safety in the home than in the playgrounds. Children are protected in the confines of your home.
You need not worry about their being bullied, roaming around unsafe neighborhoods, and exposures to drugs and alcohol.
There are also the financial aspects. Some parents cannot afford to send the child to a formal school due to high tuition fees.
There are disadvantages too, some of which may be difficult to measure. The child’s social life is curtailed.
The child loses the chance to associate with other children and share experiences with them. The child could develop introversion and find comfort in being a recluse.
The affect on the child might not be felt immediately. It might come out in the later years of adulthood and may be too late to remediate.
Children fail to develop interaction and communication skills with their peers. Children do not get to participate in extracurricular activities and other services and programs provided by schools.
These school activities are equally as important in the development of a child. The parents could be on the losing end too. There is less time spent exchanging ideas and camaraderie with their own adult social groups and work associates.
The trend for homeschooling appears to be growing. People believe it is the better approach to educating a child. It may be a feasible option.
Try to work out a balance between the pros and cons, and provide alternatives to offset the disadvantages.
