Show Your Child How to Use the Internet

Computers are here to stay. Computers are becoming an integral part of our lives and a standard accessory in our daily activities.

Children learn to use the computer at an early age. Pre-school establishments normally have computers available for the children to practice on.

There are several sites in the internet that help in the education of children. There are spelling and number games that are both entertaining and educational for the children. There are a large variety of games that the child can choose from.

It is very difficult for the child to lose interest in the computer since there are so many sites to go into and so many different games to try out.

The internet is open to anybody who knows how to use a computer and log in to the internet. There are sites for children and for adults. We must ensure that the child is limited to those sites that are for children. We can institute security measures but smart children may be able to find ways around it.

We have to make children aware of the perils when they go into sites they are not allowed do. Hackers lurk in the internet and wait for people to slip and expose their personal information.

Children may not be aware of the evil intent of some people and might give personal family information freely to anybody inquiring in the internet. With the information at hand, devious people can perform underhanded tactics to extort money and other valuables from the victims. Some people may want to cause harm to them. We need to discipline our children to ensure that they obey the rules on the use of the internet.

Here are some suggestions on what rules could be imposed regarding the use of the internet.

Put bookmarks on the sites that are open to the children. Instruct the children to always use the bookmarks when they want to use the internet. Prohibit them from going to other sites aside from what you have taught them. Impose strict punishments if they intentionally go to other sites not in the bookmarks.

Aside from the sites for adults, there may be dummy sites set up to get personal data from the person to aid in promotional campaigns. Be careful. This information is supposed to be confidential. Professional technical gurus are capable of breaking into these files and accessing all the confidential information.

There is software available that can track the different sites that a person went through. Use a tracking software to monitor the sites that are being browsed.

Instruct the children to never put their full name or address on the internet. Give the child a funny name to use when they log in. Tell them it’s part of the game and makes playing more fun. If the game requires entering an address, give your children a fake address to use in the site. This reduces the possibilities of stalkers getting to know your children and where you live.

Limit the use of the internet to several hours. Computer games are addictive and children can get carried away in the games. There is no logical end as most games just keep going on and on. Children should allot some time for outdoor activities and physical interaction with their friends.

Don’t allow them to make contact with their online “friends” without your knowledge. The information provided in the internet might not be true and the “friend” might be luring the children for some evil purpose. If your child insists on meeting a person who they became acquainted with in the Internet, accompany them or make sure they are in the company of close friends and relatives.

Place the computer in a busy place in the house. You can observe the usage and ensure that they are going to the correct sites. If they have questions or encounter difficulties, they can easily turn to you for advice and guidance.

The internet has become part of our lives. We cannot avoid using it. You and your children can benefit from the internet. Be safe and secure when using it.
