Tame Toddlers at Bedtime

The toddler stage of a child’s life has its fair share of good and bad moments. The good is how cute, adorable and sweet the child is and the bad is the temper tantrums that accompany the 2 to 3 year phase. You are probably ready to agree that bad behaviour and temper go together. This behaviour is often noticeable at bedtime because a routine has not been established.

You just can’t wait to hit the bed after a really long, exhausting day, but your toddler has other ideas. Bedtime is a favourite time for the frustrations to surface.

The first thing to practice in sleeping times, wakeup times and meal times is consistency. Make it a practice to get the little one in bed at the same time every night. It is a good idea to establish this consistent routine right from the very beginning. Don’t wait for your child to be a certain age before you establish a routine or you will have problems.

The second one may be a bit more difficult but can be done. Establish a routine of activities that are the same every night. Don’t drag the child off for urgent grocery shopping in the middle of the nightly routine. One time it can happen, we all know that, but get the activities well organized.

When it comes to bed time, there should be no strenuous wide-awake activities planned. A warm bath, story-telling and playing baby music will all help to encourage sleep. Electronic equipment for babies and toddlers can be found in baby shops – such as one which plays music and flashes soft teddy bears on the ceiling.

It is not advisable to lie in bed with the toddler till he goes to sleep. ** However, if you enjoy this time with your child reading or telling stories, sleep will come. You could tell your child that you are going off to do some chore and will be back to check up on him or her. This may not always work as the child may wake-up asking for a drink of water or something else.

Once you establish a consistent routine, you will have no problems getting your child off to bed and hopefully yourself as well.

When children are young, consistency is the catchword by which you establish routines. Your toddler has a very low threshold for holding frustration and, once triggered, you can forget going to bed in a hurry.

Good night!
