Testing Your Child for Artistic Talents
Preschoolers and toddlers have no inhibitions. They let loose with all their talents and skills and are not embarrassed if their work does not meet anybody?s approval. Art can be taught and learned, but there are rare instances when the person exhibits an inherent aptitude to artistic designs. Train the child to hold the pencil or crayon in their hands.
Ensure that they do not use the object for poking or chewing. Once you have all the safety precautions in place, let the child loose and see if they have the artist in them.
Once a child learns to use the pencil or crayon, teach the child to use the object on acceptable material, such as paper. Discipline them if they start drawing on the walls, tables or furniture. This part of the training is to show them the correct usage of the pencil or crayon.
They may have a desire to show their talents but it should be done with the proper materials. It would not be advisable to have their masterpieces strewn all over the walls as it would be difficult to store the drawings for posterity.
It is delightful to watch a child discover that they can draw all kinds of lines; straight, curvy, and round. Once they give vent to their artistic emotions, let them explore the possibilities of drawing all kinds of pictures. Show them a simple picture and teach them to trace and draw it. An example may be a simple cartoon character, house or outdoor scenery. The child can see the character portrayed in the cartoon and they can relate their drawing to the cartoons.
Children drawings start as senseless scribbles. They simply move the pencil or crayon in all directions and enjoy seeing the marks they make on the paper. Show them the alphabet and see if they can trace the letters on the paper. This may be the start of their learning how to write the alphabet. Observe if their scribbles begin to take shape. Encourage them.
Learning to draw pictures usually happens in a spontaneous approach. Ask the child what their scribbling represent and show them pictures of what they imagined their scribbling to be. From the scribbling phase, the child will enter the next phase of development which is drawing shapes, such as squares, triangles and circles. They will eventually interconnect the shapes to make pictorial designs and then move on to depict representations of real things, like houses and people.
Provide the child with coloring books and tracing paper. Show them how to use the different crayon colors and how the mixture of colors blend together to make a pretty picture. Exposing the child to all types of drawing aids may help bring out the talents of the child. You can hold the hand of the child and guide them through the process of writing straight and curvy lines. Don?t rush the child. The actual creative design of a picture will be done by the child at their own time and place.
It is our responsibility to ensure that the child is provided sufficient freedom to express themselves and exhibit their skills and talents. Sometimes, their hand movements are an expression of their inner feelings. Be observant and understand what the child is trying to express. Allow the artistic development of the child to nurture and grow.
