Toddler Taming: Avoid Spoiling the Child

A small child can appear extremely cute and attractive. Parents find it difficult to take a firm line when necessary and end up spoiling the child. Alternatively, parents prefer to overlook rather than deal with, taking the easiest way out to avoid the tantrums.

None of this is going to help raise a well-mannered child. The toddler stage will pass and after that you need to be sure you have laid the right foundations for a well-behaved, reasonable child.

How can you stop bad behavior and make changes so that your child does not carry this behavior into the next stage of its development?

These are some simple steps that you can adopt:

Setting limits: toddlers look to their parents to set the boundaries. They need consistency and discipline even though they rail against it. You need to set clear limits about what your child can and cannot do. When you leave the child room to wriggle through it only means having to deal with problems at a later date.

Let us take a simple example. Children are always hungry and after a cookie. If it is a long way to meal time you can give the child a cookie but make it completely clear that it will be the only one. Even if your child begs for another you need to stand firm by your word. In this way your toddler will realize that you mean what you said. If you cave in and provide the second cookie today and tomorrow refuse to provide even one, you are going to end up with a very confused child. The lack of consistency will make the child very frustrated and then you have to deal with tantrums.

A begging child is to be ignored right from the start. Give in once and you are setting yourself up for some major problems. Ignore and continue to ignore regardless of the pleas and entreaties. Your child will get the message.

Give your child simple chores to do alongside you. This will allow you to spend more time with the child and keep it out of mischief. You can hand your toddler a duster and ask for help in dusting around a room or help in handing you the washing to hang out. Thank the child and show great appreciation. You will find you have a very willing volunteer.

Don’t give your child everything they want when it is wanted. Let the child earn treats and you will find that there is a greater sense of accomplishment when a treat is earned. This is a good lesson to teach your child.

Raising a toddler is never easy, but with love and perseverance it can be done right.
