These are simple sewing projects that many kids, young and old can enjoy.
I've included ideas for a no-sew version of this - but even beginning sewers can get nice results.
I think sewing is a good experience for kids.
It kept her hands busy on those days we couldn't play outside.
I may be biased, as I have done a lot of sewing over the years.
Young children will need help cutting out the felt and help sewing, but it was fun, and we didn't mind any mistakes.
Older children can do this project on their own.
I am assuming that an adult is available who knows some very basic sewing, like how to do a running stitch or overcast stitch.
Parental supervision is recommended.
This project is rated AVERAGE to do.
What You Need
Felt
Needle and thread
Scissors
A few pins or small safety pins
Fiberfill or cotton balls for stuffing
Assorted buttons, trims and fabric paint, depending on your project
Tacky craft glue
Wiggle eyes, optional
Small Jingle Bell, optional
Ribbon or yarn to hang the ornament with
How To Make It
Read all the directions below to determine what you'll need for your project.
Gingerbread People
Use brown felt, buttons for eyes, and buttons down the front of the boy. A piece of gathered eyelet trim can make a cute skirt on a girl. You can also use white fabric/craft paint to make 'icing'.
Decorate the front (and back, if you wish) of your gingerbread person. If you used paint, let it dry.
Attach a ribbon loop to top of the head for hanging. Attach it with some small stitches to the wrong side (what will be inside) of the back of the ornament.
Then stitch the front to the back, leaving a small area open for stuffing - about an inch wide. I suggest leaving part of the inner leg open for stuffing.
If you stitch it with white yarn or embroidery thread you can have an 'icing' effect - as illustrated.
You could also stitch it with brown thread and then paint icing over the stitching with fabric paints once you are done. Be sure to stuff it and finish stitching first!
Stuff, and then sew the last part shut.
Guinea Pigs
Using markers, trace pig on felt. Cut out 2 for each ornament. Trace and cut two ears from black or pink felt.
Glue on ears and eyes. Draw nose with marker or puff paint and let dry. This is also the time to do any custom painting, if you want to add extra markings to make it look like your special piggy.
Sew two pieces together, right side facing out.
Leave opening on bottom large enough to lightly stuff with fiberfill.
Stuff pig enough so it is slightly plump but still remains flat. Stitch the bottom section closed.
Attach yarn just behind head for hanger. Add bell to base of hanger. You're done!!
You're Done!
You might want to write your name and the date on the back of the ornament with fabric paint, and maybe a short message.
Hang your ornament up, give it as a gift, use it as the tag on a gift, or use it to mark place settings at your holiday table (write the name of the person you are giving it to on the back instead of your name).
