“How To Make Wreaths”

Learn how to make a variety of wreaths, from Christmas to spring wreaths.
Every season has a need for a beautiful wreath. Many think of hanging a wreath on your front door as a sort of welcoming sign.
But, you can also hang wreaths thoughout the interior of your home.
With a little imagination you can turn your home into an inviting sight with beautiful wreaths.
To begin, you need to decide what type of wreath you want to have. There are many types of materials to make leaves out of, such as: ivy, ferns, pine, or grapevine. Visit your local craft store to pick out one that you like. Once you've done this, you're ready to start creating.
Making the frame of your wreath: Buy a wire frame from your local craft store, or take a coat hanger and bend into desired shape.
When we think of wreaths, we often assume they must be circular.
Your wreath can be as unique as you are. Shape into an oval, egg shaped, or heart shaped to give it a new look. Once you've shaped your wire, attach one end of #24 floral wire anywhere on your wire frame.
Now take your floral material(ivy, grapevine, etc) and wind around your wire, intertwining the branches until your wreath has a full look to it.
Next, begin wrapping the floral wire around the entire wreath to tighten the look of your wreath. You're ready to begin adding to make your wreath festive.
Christmas Wreaths:
Everyone always thinks of Christmas when they see wreaths, but you don't have to have the same old boring wreath from year to year.
Try something new by cutting small images from the fronts of Christmas cards and inserting between floral wire, or do the same with holiday pictures.
You can also purchase minature ornaments and insert in your wreath. Of course you can also use the traditional items like pinecones, dried leaves, acorns/nuts, holly, or bells.
Use a bit of hot glue to attach these items to your wreath. I have also used things like scraps of beautiful wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows to dress up my wreaths.
Cut wrapping paper into desired shapes and use hot glue to hold down.
Or wrap tiny square foams and dress up with leftover wrapping paper and ribbon, then glue onto your wreath. Be creative, you'd be amazed at what you can do.
New Year's Wreaths:
No one ever thinks of making a wreath for New Year's, but this holiday is a great one to dress up for!! Purchase mini champagne bottles found in the party favors section of any store.
Buy party hats, horn blowers, and confetti. Glue confetti to a cut-out section of a paper plate and then hot glue to your wreath.
Hot glue all other items to your wreath also. This makes a great addition to a wonderful holiday!
Valentine's Day:
Of course your wreath should be in the shape of a heart for this holiday. Then take candy hearts, Valentine garland, old love letters, photos, or cut-out pictures of angels.
Anything that makes you think of love has a place on this wreath. You can attach cut-out pictures to a piece of posterboard or a paper plate and then attach to your wreath.
Attach candy hearts and weave Valentine garland throughout.
Easter:
Your wreath should be in the shape of an egg for this one! Weave spring flowers (dried or silk) into your wreath such as lilies or magnolias.
Take small Easter eggs and hot glue #24 floral wire to one side of each egg. Attach eggs to wreath by wrapping wire around wreath. You can fill eggs if you desire for an Easter treat.
Fourth of July:
Dress up your wreath for the Fourth with red, blue and white! Visit your local craft store to find various party favors or mini decorations to attach. Or buy small fireworks and hot glue to your wreath.
Use black cats, small sparklers, or other colorful fireworks to attach. Be sure to keep away from flame and children if you use fireworks!
Halloween:
Make a spooky wreath for all those trick-or-treaters to see. Use mini pumpkins, spiders, ghosts to attach with hot glue to your wreath.
Or you can attach candy corn or miniature candy pumpkins. Weave Halloween garland throughout and you've got one scary sight!
Thanksgiving:
Attach dried or silk fall colored leaves to your wreath. You can also use mini plastic pumpkins, gourds, nuts, or cut-out turkeys to make this wreath memorable.
Thanksgiving is a time when my entire family is together, so we always come prepared.
Each of us writes on a small piece of posterboard the three things that we are most grateful for. (Be sure each person signs and dates their's).
On Thanksgiving day we attach them to the wreath and display.
Each year we have a new wreath to bring out, but it's so much fun to re-read what we have been thankful for each year.
