There is generally one of two reasons a child performs head banging, and it’s either frequently displayed in a temper tantrum or the child does it as a form of harmless fun.
The Concerns…
Naturally the parents are concerned with this behavior, and the damage the child may do to his brain.
There are parents who believe the head banging behavior is a sign of physical or mental development, but more than likely if the child is normal in every other way head banging is not in any way a sign of significance.
No Real Pain…
Children who are in a temper mood, and start head banging usually hit their head against a wall or floor, in most cases rarely hurting themselves, but, if this happens, it wasn’t meant to.
Most of the time they carefully scan the area for the right surface to have the right affect, with no real harm to them.
Head banging tantrums generally pass with age or once the child becomes aware this behavior is ineffective.
BORED OR TIRED…
With the bored or tired child, the head banging will normally be while in the cot and may get quite a movement up while doing this, don’t be surprised to find the cot has moved across the floor or the cot has been so rattled it may collapse.
Try To Prevent…
A good start is to prevent lengthy periods of boredom, do what you can to ignore most head banging totally, if this is not able to be done, try the gentle approach to prevent this behavior or you might like to place some suitable lining around him, as he may wish to continue his favorite and harmless pastime.
