Take a look at the average family teatime, mum is usually hard at work in the kitchen area, buzzing from one side to the other, preparing or dishing up or mixing and cutting things, but still watching everything else.

Mum or Dad sit down to his or her own tea and with a young child to be fed can be very amusing to an outsider.

Say the child is 1, 2, or 3 years old, by the time Mum or Dad has time to get some food into themselves they’ve been hit by a flying spoonful of mashed potato and peas.

Around the time your child starts playing with his food is a good time to take it away from, regardless if he is hungry or not.

This will teach your child that meal time is for eating not playing , and to avoid being hit with the remainder of a sausage.

Preventing The Food Fight…

Even if you are tired or don’t like the meal you have on your plate, don’t play with it or dawdle.

Sit and eat it with enthusiasm, this is basically leading by example.

If your child sees you playing, they will think they are allowed to do it.

Planning Your Meals…

The foods your child eats should be the same as the rest of the family.

This will discourage your child from being more interested in the food you have on your plate and not their own.

Teaching Table Manners…

Everyone needs table manners, it is a bit of a shame but children don’t come pre-programmed with table manners.

Would be nice though wouldn’t it?

The best time to start teaching table manners is, just for example, when you can sit and have a tea party in the sandpit or on the lawn.
